The Anishinaabe First Nation people, who lived here for centuries before the coming of the Europeans, called this place ‘Bawating’ meaning “the place of the fast flowing waters”. It was their gathering place. There has been a Catholic presence in Sault Ste. Marie since the 1600s when the Jesuits first arrived. Precious Blood Cathedral has been the visible and active sign of Catholicism in this area since 1875 and has been the seat of the Bishop for many generations. Previous Catholic generations have left us as people of faith with a rich history. Our parents, grandparents and great grandparents have ‘grown’ the Church by their good works and contributions to education and healthcare. Their faith journey has brought us to today. Our journey from the 1600s, through industrialization and many periods of immigration continues into the 21st century. As we stand on the shoulders of all who have gone before us, future generations will stand on our shoulders enjoying what we have preserved and celebrated.
Our ‘Gathering Place’ will be constructed on the Cathedral grounds for all Catholics and others who may be interested in the historic impact of Catholicism in Sault Ste. Marie and area. The creation of this multi-use gathering place will provide both indoor and outdoor settings for celebration, education and outreach. In essence, it will offer to all of us the gift of remembrance and a place to celebrate our heritage, inspire and enliven our present and will become a lasting tribute for future generations that follow.
